Harrison Undergraduate Research Award

Minerva Award

Amount: $3,000

Who It's For: Undergraduate student in the College

What’s Required: In addition to the application packet, applicants must prepare a 5 minute pitch promoting their research project to an audience and a panel of faculty and student judges. The judges will ask questions and offer feedback, which will factor in the College Council Grants Committee decisions.

Raven Society Fellowships

Amount: $2,500 per project

Who It's For: The University of Virginia’s Raven Society invites applications for its 2018 Raven Fellowships. The Society established the Raven Fellowships in 1984 to encourage undergraduate and graduate student pursuit of scholarly, intellectual, and creative projects. The Raven Society endeavors to bring together outstanding students, faculty, administrators, and alumni of the various schools of the University so that they may derive the benefits of mutual acquaintance in pursuit of diligent scholarship and intellectual activity beyond the limits of systematic work in the classroom. As such, the Raven Fellowships target innovative research projects that cross disciplines in novel ways. While all applications will be reviewed, special consideration will be given to those projects with an interdisciplinary focus.

What’s Required: Please e-mail all of the following materials, excepting the letters of recommendation, as a single document e-mail attachment in the following order:

  • The attached application form
  • The attached budget form, signed by your faculty supervisor
  • Your project proposal
  • Your resume or CV
  • Unofficial transcripts from all colleges attended (undergraduate and graduate)

Community Based Undergraduate Research Grant Award

Amount: Up to $3,000 for individuals, $5,000 for teams

Application Due: February 13, 2018 by 12 p.m.

Who It's For: Community Based Undergraduate Research Grants will provide opportunities for students to develop research projects that apply their academic skills, experiences, and ideas to real world problems. The grants are not limited to a single academic field. Interdisciplinary work is encouraged. Student researchers, under the guidance of a faculty advisor and in collaboration with a community organization, will identify a project that addresses a documented public need or issue. Student researchers will design a research project, adopt and deploy a research methodology embedded in an academic field(s), create a research product (paper, presentation, etc.) that benefits the community organization and meets expectations of academic rigor as agreed on by the faculty advisor and the student researcher(s).

What’s Required: Awards will be granted on a competitive basis. Please see attached application form. A budget of anticipated expenses including travel, living expenses, research supplies should not exceed $3,000. If research is a team project that includes graduate students and other undergraduate students, then the budget may not exceed $5,000. An honorarium of $1,000 will be awarded to the faculty advisor.

Double Hoo Grants

Amount: $6,000 for the pair of students

Who It's For: The Double Hoo Research Grant supports pairs of undergraduate and graduate scholars seeking to pursue research together. The program is intended to encourage collaborative interaction between the undergraduate and graduate communities throughout the University. These collaborations provide opportunities for more advanced research for undergraduates and valuable mentoring experiences for the graduate student. Awards of up to $6,000 are granted to undergraduate/graduate pairs to be shared between the two at their discretion and used within one year. Faculty advisors receive $500 in research support. Grant recipients make a progress report and a final report to the Center for Undergraduate Excellence, and they present their research at a spring gathering. Beginning in Spring 2016, the program will offer a renewal process for pairs that plan to continue their work.What’s Required: Applications must be submitted jointly by undergraduate-graduate student pairs. The undergraduate may be a first- or second-year student at the time of application. Third- year applicants are limited to transfer students. The program focuses on first and second year undergraduate students with the purpose of creating an access point to research. This early entry point also allows for longer partnerships (see question #5). Graduate students must be enrolled in a doctoral program. All applicants must be full-time U.Va. students and must remain enrolled at the University through the completion of their project (i.e., spring of the year following application). The Center welcomes proposals from all subject areas and schools at the University.

Kenan Fellowship

Amount: $4,000 for students, $1,000 for faculty advisors

Who It's For: The William R. Kenan Endowment Fund of the Academical Village has established an endowment to fund educational outreach programs that further the educational mission of Jefferson’s Academical Village. The fund will support five awards of $5,000 ($4,000 for students, $1,000 for faculty advisors) for full-time research to be conducted during the summer. Undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Virginia are eligible to apply. The awards are open to students in all disciplines, all departments, and all schools.

What’s Required: Applications must include:

  • A concise description (two page maximum) of the proposed research project. The applicant should explain what is to be done, where the research will be carried out, and what will be the final product. The applicant should indicate how the project contributes to greater public understanding of the Academical Village, and what impact the research will have on her or his intellectual development. You should include a bibliography of any references you have used in your project development (this bibliography does not count towards the two page maximum)
  • A one-page resume that includes class, major, and relevant course work and prior experience. A budget of anticipated expenditures (half a page maximum), including research supplies and materials, living expenses, and travel.
  • Unofficial Transcript
  • A letter of support from the student’s faculty sponsor. The faculty sponsor should be a full time teaching and research faculty member. The sponsor should explain the basis for concluding that the student is capable of completing the project at a level of high quality and also specify the sponsor’s anticipated role and degree of involvement in the project. The sponsor should submit this letter directly to the Center for Undergraduate Excellence, brc7q@virginia.edu, as a .doc or .pdf attachment.

University Undergraduate Award for Arts

Amount: up to $3,000

Who It's For: The University Award for Projects in the Arts is intended to expand students’ opportunities for creative expression and showcase significant accomplishments in the arts. The program, modeled after the University’s successful Harrison Undergraduate Research Awards, funds outstanding undergraduate projects in the arts to be carried out in the summer and the upcoming academic year. Each student applicant or group of applicants proposes a project of creative work. Eligible projects might include writing or directing a play or film, writing a collection of poetry, designing costumes for a play, choreographing a dance, creating a sculpture, or composing or performing a piece of music. The University-wide awards have been funded in the past by a range of schools and offices including the College, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Nursing, the Office of the Vice President and Chief Information Officer, the Center for Undergraduate Excellence, the Vice Provost for Academic Programs, the Vice President for Research, and the Vice Provost for the Arts. They are open to all undergraduates, regardless of schools or majors.

Jefferson Public Citizens

Amount: Based on budget for project

Application Due: December 6th, 2017

Who It's For: JPC students may apply as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students. 4th year students who will be enrolling as graduate students at U.Va. for the following year may also apply. It’s assumed that 3rd year students will be the primary contact for the project. All members for the JPC group will have to demonstrate in the application that they have the skills and experience to contribute to the overall success of the project. All members of the JPC group must be enrolled as a fulltime U.Va. student for the duration of the JPC project. Graduate students who serve as mentors to the JPC group may be enrolled in coursework or be ABD.

Quandt Fund for International Research

Amount: up to $3,000

Number of Grants: N/A

Application Due: March 2018

Who It's For: Politics students, undergraduate and graduate, for international study in any region or country, including structured programs and individual research

What’s Required: Submit a statement of purpose, an estimated budget including other planned or pending applications, and an unofficial transcript. One faculty letter of recommendation is required, not necessarily from a Politics faculty member.
