Politics Honors Program

Application Prerequisites: Students apply to the program during the second semester of their second year.Candidates have usually completed at least two courses in the Department of Politics by the time they apply, but the program will consider candidates with less if they can otherwise demonstrate their commitment to the study of politics. An open meeting for interested students is held in February.

Application Process:

  1. Completed applicaiton form and checklist.
  2. A resume.
  3. An official transcript.
  4. Two graded term papers from any course in any department, not to exceed 8-10 pages each.
  5. Two short essays, each one discussing an idea or issue in politics that you would like to investigate during your time in the Honors program. Explain why you believe these issues are important to the broader study of politics. The two essays combined should be no longer than two single-spaced pages.
  6. Letters of recommendation from any two University faculty members. These letters should be sent separately to: Politics Honors Program, c/o Ms. Sharon Marsh, Department of Politics, P.O. Box 400787, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22904.

Political and Social Thought

Application Prerequisites: There are no formally listed prerequisites to apply for the major other than being enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. Most applicants are in their second year of study at the University of Virginia. Furthermore, it is recommended that interested students take at least one foundations courses that would count toward the major.

Application Process:

  1. A completed PST application form.
  2. A letter of recommendation by a faculty member.
  3. A 300-500 word essay. This essay should address the following two questions: (1) Why are you interested in becoming a PST major? (2) At this (tentative) point, what three area studies would you select in constructing your PST curriculum? This answer does not obligate students to a particular course of studies if they are accepted into the program.
  4. A writing sample. Students may submit a previously completed term paper or essay (preferably with the instructor's comments on it) or a piece of creative writing.
